It's OK to like 'The Artist'

It's OK to like 'The Artist.' Really. Chances are, you haven't even seen 'The Artist' yet, nevertheless the general consensus within the Oscar cognoscenti (recently promoted from Colonel Consensus) has switched sour round the film. At first, General Consensus recognized 'The Artist' since the bees' knees. "Hooray, 'The Artist,' you're so different. We like to you!" But, alas, General Consensus can be a finicky fellow. Because, recently -- even though it's still the widely used to think about home an Oscar for top Picture -- acknowledging that you would like 'The Artist' will allow you to get comparable reaction as acknowledging that you just think the Gin Blossoms' 'New Miserable Experience' is probably the best albums in the early 1990's. Yes, 'The Artist' offers a great deal more that's like the Gin Blossoms than it may seem. Last evening I used to be speaking around the telephone with a friend, Steve, who lives in St. Louis. Steve has two youthful kids, so he must be, let's say, selective along with his movie options, given all the free time he doesn't have. Once I told him he'd like 'The Artist,' his less-than-thrilled reaction was, "The black and white-colored quiet movie? Unsure that's my bag.Inch There lies the problem with 'The Artist': there's a notion it's highbrow fare. It is not. 'The Artist' will have a highbrow concept, nonetheless its story is decidedly middlebrow. The expectation that's resulting in Steve not to need to visit 'The Artist' might well be the identical expectation that's fueling the backlash against 'The Artist.' People who critique movies for a job certainly are a passionate bunch. Each time a movie like 'The Artist' arrives -- a movie that apparently promises highbrow pleasures -- these people get excited. But 'The Artist' can be a regular old story of a quiet film actor trying to stay relevant in the changing world. Oh, which he features a cute dog. Put it using this method: The guy who carried out Dauber on 'Coach' is at 'The Artist.' This is one way backlash happens. I've now heard people of honours-voting organizations apologizing for 'The Artist' winning, that's strange because ale 'The Artist' to supply this kind of mainstream, middlebrow story, despite its highfalutin concept, is exactly what I admire a great deal relating to this. You'll find four albums that defined my newcomer year attending school: Jewel Jam's 'Ten' (even though it absolutely was released yearly before), R.E.M's 'Automatic for anybody,A U2's 'Achtung Baby' and Gin Blossoms' 'New Miserable Experience.' Typically 'New Miserable Experience' found critical success too, at first, receiving solid reviews from shops like Moving Stone. I've 'New Miserable Experience' in my ipod device tool and, almost 2 decades later, every song on that album remains good. (Some a lot better than others, clearly I really do find myself hearing '29,' 'Cajun Song,' 'Cheatin'' and, yes, 'Hey Jealousy,' greater than I really do 'Hold Me Down'.) This Season, Gin Blossoms are forgotten without any you may ever consider them becoming an influential band within the the 19 nineties. If there is a middlebrow blemish around our planet's crust, its oozing puss is for certain to sooner or later erupt for the tune of 'Found out About Yourself.A The Gin Blossoms define middlebrow success and, really, people don't have a problem with that -- but, clearly, the Gin Blossoms were quickly disposed of. 'The Artist' is pretending being highbrow having its concept when, the simple truth is, its much like middlebrow since the Gin Blossoms. Only 'The Artist' doesn't wish to be disposed of, it desires to be appreciated forever since the best movie of 2011. Because of this people are angry. Our World can be a cynical place nowadays. I am cynical which is a reason I have this. I have trouble with this often. I watch a movie like 'War Equine,' 'Hugo' or 'The Artist,' which personally i think this knee-jerk reaction to in some manner make an effort to discredit the earnestness I see before me. It's much like we've been designed just like a society being skeptical of something which appears being serious -- and 'The Artist' is really serious. But people are predisposed to bear in mind items that possess a little really a benefit. The Gin Blossoms had zero edge. The earnestness of 'The Artist' is its edge. Which is OK to like that. One common argument is always that 'The Artist' just doesn't appear just like a Best Picture champion that individuals won't be talking about 'The Artist' in ten years. I don't accept this sentiment, however i am open to the possibility. My real challenge with the argument is always that there's no realistic alternative offered. The argument against 'The Artist' is starting to appear like the argument against virtually something which Obama does. Basically: "That plan sucks, however i don't have a better one. Nevertheless it still sucks." The simple truth is, searching back, very handful of Best Picture individuals who win really deserve the title of "Best Picture." Within the last 2 decades, there's, maybe, six films that have that-important "Best Picture" sense of them. I'd argue outdoors of 'Unforgiven,' 'Schindler's List,' 'Braveheart,' 'Titanic,' 'The Master in the Rings: Return in the King' and 'No Country For Old Males,' the comfort been released throughout an insufficient year or got incredibly lucky. Yes, I am the first someone to admit that 2011 can be a relatively weak year for movies -- good, but... -- but that's certainly not down to 'The Artist.' Yet, since the current leader, it's while using blame. 'The Artist' isn't the initial film to disguise itself as highbrow, it's just the first ones to make its intentions this apparent and open. That's the key reason why it's brilliant. Based on past individuals who win, 'The Artist' is obviously a deserving candidate. (You're saying 'The Artist' doesn't satisfy the "excellent" standards of 'American Beauty'? Oh, puh-leeze.) But that's not always even my point. I'm not particularly fighting that 'The Artist' should win the Oscar for top Picture any more than I'm fighting that 'New Miserable Experience' should have won a Grammy (U2's Auchtung Baby should have won over Eric Clapton Unplugged). I am proclaiming that I completely loved 'The Artist' and, yes, the right response is OK to think way without needing to be ashamed for liking something that's serious and middlebrow -- cynics like myself be damned. Ferrell and the co-stars, including "Y Tu Mama Tambien" stars Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, go that step further: Ferrell's dialogue, along with the most of the film's, is within The spanish language. Consider Uggie, Day 7: Is Artist Wonder Dog 'Facing Retirement'?

Even if no awards body deigns to recognize the year’s finest screen work by a dog (or anyone else, for that matter), we can all take some comfort in knowing that Movieline’s Consider Uggie campaign has attained an apex of some kind: The Artist’s wonder-dog sidekick has been featured in that celebrated repository of prestige, glamor and influence otherwise known as Page Six. But that’s the good news; another, more troubling report on Uggie suggests that this campaign may be his last shot at golden glory. I mean, maybe Ramin Setoodeh went a little too deep on Uggie for The Daily Beast, because cue the heartbreak: Despite all the critical acclaim, Uggie is facing retirement. At 9, he doesn’t have any other gigs lined up, and he spends most of his days lounging by the pool or playing with [trainer Omar von] Muller’s 6-year-old daughter. “His health is good, but he has a bit of a shaking syndrome that white dogs get, *”Muller says. “People will think he’s nervous or cold, but it’s a neurological thing.” […] [Artist co-star James] Cromwell for one thinks the Academy should revise its rules to recognize non-human performers. “I wish there was an award, whether it was an Oscar or not, that demonstrated the contributions that animals make in the telling of a story,” he says. “In the Q&A’s we have, everyone says, ‘Where did you get that extraordinary dog?’” As mentioned previously, Uggie is due. Pay attention, Academy, before you miss your chance! Don’t let an oversight like this haunt you Raging Bull-style for decades to come. Elsewhere, meanwhile, the NY Post doubled up on its Uggie coverage over the weekend, with both a full feature on the #ConsiderUggie movement and a kind of mindblowing inclusion Saturday in Page Six. He had to share the space with Beginners co-star Cosmo — the year’s other acclaimed Jack Russell terrier — but still! No one can deny this milestone, which only portends more to come: If the Oscars had a canine category, it would be dog-eat-dog this year between Jack Russell terriers Cosmo and Uggie. The dogs play key roles in Beginners and The Artist, movies that have won best-picture prizes in the awards derbies leading to the Academy Awards. […] Uggie’s just taped an interview with Ryan Seacrest and is getting ink in W, Time and Newsweek. There’s even a “Consider Uggie” Facebook page. Behind the scenes, Cosmo has the advantage for avoiding paparazzi: His hair-and-makeup team on Beginners gave the all-white pooch tan spots with vegetable-based coloring. If the Oscars don’t add a category, perhaps they can at least hope for the MTV Movie Awards. Team Uggie will take it! But for now, keep the awards-season dream alive on Twitter and Facebook. And I guess I should start some kind of PayPal page for his retirement present. Developing… Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

First Published: November 30, 2011 9:01 PM EST Credit: Access Hollywood Caption Access Extended: Mindy McCready Talks Getting Sober On Celebrity RehabLOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Mindy McCready is expecting twins. A rep for the embattled country singer confirmed the news to People on Wednesday. According to the Associated Press, which spoke to the singer on Wednesday, McCready is 7 months pregnant. Neither report listed details of who the father of the babies is. Earlier on Wednesday, McCready responded first to Access Hollywood, following a report she and her son, Zander, 5, were missing. I am working with lawyers to try to get all this straightened out, she told Access Hollywood in an e-mail on Wednesday. Custom Bellflower Medusa Car Can Be Yours to Drive Around the Apocalypse For Just $250,000

After you watch the horrific repercussions of Twilight’s sweet, placenta-chomping vampire romance this weekend, check out the indie drama Bellflower, one of the year’s more vivid and gut-wrenching examinations of the more painful side of love. You think delivering a monster baby is stressful, Bella Swan? Just see what happens to poor Woodrow (writer-director Evan Glodell) in the aftermath of puppy love. At least he’s got the kick-ass, flame-throwing, apocalypse-ready Medusa car to ride around in… which can be yours, Bellflower fans, for just a few (thousand — OK, many thousands of) bucks! I raved about Bellflower earlier this year, but since it only opened in limited release opportunities to see it were scarce. The micro-budgeted flick is available as of this week on DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD, so no more excuses! Okay, the real reason I’m posting this: Over at the official website of Coatwolf Productions, the Bellflower crew’s got a special item for sale. YOU CAN HAVE YOUR VERY OWN MEDUSA CAR. WHICH SHOOTS FLAMES AND IS GENERALLY THE MOST BADASS CAR IMAGINABLE. And only for $250,000! (Someone buy this for me, yes? Heck, with that much money the Bellflower crew could make over a dozen more Bellflowers!) As described by Glodell: If you give us $250,000 — Myself, Paul Edwardson and the entire Coatwolf team will drop whatever we are doing for a month and go crazy building you a badass post-apocalyptic, fire breathing, battle ready Medusa Car. We will even cover the legal fees to make sure we can deliver it to you without getting arrested. Glodell, whose Bellflower getup made for an amazing if obscure movie-referencing costume this past Halloween, also posted a new alternate trailer for the film, shot this past summer, which beautifully encapsulates what the movie’s about. Watch it below and look for Bellflower on home vid this weekend, if you’re in the mood for an incredibly visceral (and gorgeously-shot, on a shoestring budget) few hours that’ll cut your heart all the way open — in the best possible way, of course. Actors Give Generously to Their Alma Maters

Matthew Maguire, theater program director at Fordham University, spoke about the moment in 2003 when Denzel Washington returned to his alma mater to address the department's students. As Maguire recalled, Washington summoned Bob Stone, one of his former teachers, up onto the stage and put his arm around him. "Here's the man who made me who I am today," Washington said.Eight years later, Washington has given back in a big way to the school that helped shape his career. Fordham announced last month that the actor had made a $2 million donation to the school to create an endowed chair in theater. (Phylicia Rashad was recently named the first person to hold the chair, which will rotate among acting, directing, and design professionals.) He donated an additional $250,000 to establish an undergraduate scholarship for minority students. According to Maguire, the two gifts have already made a huge difference for the program."In the world of university politics, the big donors over time tend to be graduates of the business school and the law school," Maguire said. "So the arts can tend to languish. The programs that get the most support are the ones that produce the most gifts from the alumni."Washington is just one of many actors giving backboth with their dollars and with their timeto the places where they studied the craft. Several times over the last decade, Washington has visited Fordham's students to offer career advice. "He's always been very generous," said Maguire. He also noted the contributions of another distinguished alum, Patricia Clarkson, who every year visits and works with the program's seniors."She comes in and she talks to them," Maguire said. "What I'm really happy about is what she says to themthat they need to be able to resist typing. She's the consummate chameleon. And she amplifies our training, which is that it's all about stretching."The involvement of past students such as Washington and Clarkson lends prestige to the theater department, according to Maguire, not just within the university but also in the larger artistic community. He said Fordham now feels it can compete even with the likes of Juilliard for top-tier students. It also gives graduates of the program a sense of group identity, he said: "That's the satisfaction of it, I think, knowing that you work in a community where people support one another. That's the real value of it."Actors are also giving back elsewhere, such as at L.A.'s Stella Adler Academy of Acting and Theatre, where alumnus Mark Ruffalo sits on the board of directors. Michael Hackett expressed similar sentiments. Hackett is the chair of the Department of Theater at UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television. The school is the recent recipient of a $100,000 gift from alumna Mariska Hargitay."On a kind of inspirational level, it demonstrates to the students, many of whom also are aspiring to professional careers, that people within the profession, especially someone so engaged and active, do value and support education," Hackett said. "I think that's great for our department and inspiring other students for how they're thinking about the educational process here and in the future, how they will support young people who want to also be in the theater."Hackett adds that "support doesn't have to be money," noting that, like Washington and Clarkson, Hargitay has given a great deal of time to her old school. In fact, she committed to endowing a scholarship while addressing the school's seniors at graduation earlier this year, he said. He added that in this economic environmentwith state colleges, especially in California, undergoing budget tighteningthe scholarship could mean the difference between going to school and not going to school for its recipient. In this climate, acting programs are especially thankful for actors who can give backand it's a natural way for actors to express their own gratitude, according to Hackett. "What it means is that they have a feeling that they received something of value and they want to not only acknowledge that, but they also want to be helpful for future generations," he said. "So that's an exciting thing for us."

Early forecasts called "Tower Heist" to land near $$ 30 million, nevertheless its Friday figure indicates something reduced the mid-$20 million range.Directly on the caper's tail, DreamWorks Animation/Paramount's "Puss in Boots" required second with $7.8 million. Associates are anticipating a much better-than-usual 35% drop from last weekend, that will place it within itching distance of "Tower Heist" within the low-$20 millions.Warner Bros.' began the holidays early with "A Really Harold & Kumar three dimensional Christmas," which made $5.4 million Stateside last evening. Andre Braugher Battles the Team on SVU: "He May Be the Enemy, But He's Not a Villain"

Sendhil Ramamurthy [WARNING: The following story contains spoilers from the midseasonpremiere of Covert Affairs. Read at your own risk.]Jai packed his bags - but he didn't go to Phoenix.Instead, he moved down the hall on the Covert Affairs midseason premiere into his new, swanky digs as director of special projects for the director of national intelligence - just like he had planned.Covert Affairs' Sendhil Ramamurthy: Jai becomes a force to be reckoned withTaking matters into his own hands for once, after Joan's shoddy reassignment in the summer finale, Jai (Sendhi Ramamurthy) slyly worked everyone like any good CIA officer would. He pestered his old frat brother into having him deposed in the Intelligence Committee's investigation into the CIA leak and made sure his dad Henry (Gregory Itzin) - aka the leak and hardly the apple of the agency's eye - got wind of that. That ultimately forced Henry to pull "all" of his strings to get Jai the new gig.So what does the director of special projects do? And what does this mean for Joan (Kari Matchett), Arthur (Peter Gallagher), Annie (Piper Perabo), Auggie (Christopher Gorham) and, of course, Henry? Ramamurthy answers our burning questions about the twist and makes a promise for Season 3.What was your reaction when you found out what Jai's plan was?Sendhil Ramamurthy: I was so, so excited. I didn't [predict] it at all. ... I thought he was calling Ben Mercer ... so when I found out he was calling to get deposed and how it fell into place, it all made sense. And Jai had to do this. ... In the summer finale, there was scene between Jai and Arthur that was cut where he makes one last-ditch effort to go through the right channels. He goes to Arthur and lays it all out: "I've done everything I'm supposed to do and I'm getting screwed here and I'm not happy about it." Arthur's advice to him is, "You keep turning to other people, who are supposed to make things happen for you, and that's not the way the CIA works. If you want to be successful in the CIA, you need to rely on yourself." And that's why he made that call. Through the rest of the season, you'll see Jai take advice from people and use it to get ahead. He's smart enough to know he can get far on his own, but no one can get there solely on their own, so he goes to people who know more than he does. There are people who you think are really unlikely that he goes to for advice. He takes it and runs with it on his own. He's never going to be going against the CIA or going against the United States, but you see he's not going to be much of a boy scout. He spent most of the second season not really doing anything. Are you surprised it took this long for him to take action? Was Phoenix the last straw?Ramamurthy: I think he kind of expected to skate a little bit even though his father didn't have the greatest reputation. But Henry was feared within the CIA walls. Nobody was going to mess with Henry Wilcox. When Jai got there at first, I think he kind of assumed the same. After Phoenix, he's kind of like, "Enough is enough. I'm clearly not going to get what I want simply because of my last name," so I'm going to have to go out and get it myself. He's more than capable of it. So what does the director of special projects do?Ramamurthy: That's the question! What is this? It's a new initiative, so what the hell does that mean? That's what's really explored in these next six episodes. ... I report to the DNI [director of national intelligence], who is Arthur's boss. There's only one person above Arthur Campbell and that's the DNI. Are we going to see this guy? I don't know. We haven't explored him. What is he capable of doing? What can Jai do mission-wise? You're going to see him taking on specific missions and kind of resurrecting a mission or two that's been shelved. He's certainly looking to make his own name. Check out photos from Covert AffairsDoes he have his own minions?Ramamurthy: Yeah, he's got minions! He's got his own secretary. He has access. They built a new set [for his office] and when I walked onto the set, I was like, "Yeah! We've arrived now." It's the set right next to the Suits set, which is very cool. I was giving Peter Gallagher a hard time because Jai's office is so much nicer! He's got this huge, 50-inch flat-screen plasma with all these mini-screens underneath. The only thing I don't like about that set is that it's the hottest set on the entire show. ... I'm writing a strongly worded letter to somebody about the heat. Season 3, there'll be air conditioning! But yeah, he's big-time now. He's obviously in a position of power now, but where on the totem pole does he lie in relation to Joan?Ramamurthy: I would say they're equals now. You'll see the power struggle between Jai and Joan. They become interdependent. One has to go to the other to ask for things and vice versa. Can these two co-habit? Let's face it: They don't get along. They don't like each other. They're gonna have to find a way to make this work or not as the case may be. Kari and I always mess around on set, like Jai and Joan have hate sex after these scenes. [Laughs] Like they have this whole other life. We keep pitching it to the writers and they look at us like we're insane, but we just keep going for it anyway. We have a whole separate life going on for Jai and Joan that no one else seems to be on board for! It'd be hilarious if the show went that direction! Are there going to be blowups between them, or will they keep it professional with curt exchanges?Ramamurthy: They're curt with each other. When two people dislike each other that much, even their curt exchanges are going to be heated. With Jai 2.0, he doesn't take sh-- from anybody and he's going to go out and get what he wants from people. That may rub people the wrong way. The difference now is that Jai doesn't care. I think there was a huge part of Jai that really wanted and needed to be liked simply because Henry is hated by everybody. It's this whole stink of nepotism that's around this guy. He hates it and in his mind, it's blocking his progress. Now he's just going for it.Joan watched him pack up and leave. Does she know then that he's not going to Phoenix? Ramamurthy: I thought she didn't know. But the guys said she does know ... and you'll see [her reaction] in the very next episode. She's powerless. The head honcho has made this decision. She knows that he's now in a position of power where she may need to go to him for things. And he may come to her and she has to listen to him as an equal, which does not thrill her!How does this affect his relationship with Arthur?Ramamurthy: It has a profound effect. As you'll see in Arthur's story arc, Arthur ain't squeaky clean either. He's not Henry Wilcox, but he's done some shady things. The final scene of the season between Jai and Arthur is huge. When you're on set, usually crew members are like, "Whatever. We're getting along here." When we did the blocking for the camera, the whole crew was silent. As soon as we finished the scene, there was this, "Oooh." That never happens. Everybody took notice of that scene because it really set the stage for next season. ... There's a cliff-hanger certainly for Jai and what he wants to do.USA renews Covert Affairs, Royal Pains and Necessary RoughnessHenry basically says this isn't over between them. What can we expect?Ramamurthy: The last episode is awesome. Gregory Itzin and I rehearsed our scenes the night before over dinner and talked about their whole relationship. Jai is going to be faced with decisions that he has to make. They're not easy and he realizes they're going to have effects on his personal life and his professional life. Ultimately he makes the hard choice. I hope that that final scene with Jai and Arthur has ramifications for the relationship with Henry. You see how torn Jai is. As much as he wants to be this emotionless kind of guy, he's very much affected by it. He's been hiding it, but he's not going to let that stop him, and that's kind of the last line of that scene. Like this is Jai 2.0 and this is who he's going to be. How about Annie and Auggie? Do they figure into his big picture at all?Ramamurthy: He's been very loyal to Annie and I think he's going to continue to be very loyal to Annie. He certainly has a soft spot for Annie. I don't know, as far as exploring more between them on missions and stuff, what's going to happen, but we do explore the dynamic between Auggie and Jai quite a bit. Chris and I had a great time working together. Do you guys share any shirtless scenes?Ramamurthy: [Laughs] Sadly, no. Not yet. But hopefully there are many more seasons to come. Maybe we'll have an ab-off or something. I'm going to e-mail Matt and Chris now. We're going to work that out. It's happening. You can print that. Jai and Auggie will be shirtless at some point in the near future together in a non-homoerotic way. As we speak, I'm writing, "Auggie and Jai must be shirtless together in Season 3."

Eastwood stays fresh with latest pic

Leonardo DiCaprio stars in J. Edgar. Mengers In just a minute when Hollywood is flailing about with tired remakes, Clint Eastwood, among its more senior filmmakers, seems more determined than in the past to stake new ground. His gripping new film "J. Edgar" might be the polar the complete opposite of contemporary studio product -- a searing biopic of a megalomaniacal right-wing ideologue.Under his four-decade reign, J. Edgar Hoover used the FBI to blackmail presidents and manipulate the media to mold his image since the nation's lone protector against gangsters and "Bolsheviks." Top people in politics and reporters were scared to exhibit that J. Edgar (fantastically carried out by Leonardo DiCaprio) will be a mama's boy getting a gay lover.Eastwood's picture opens November. 9, so I am unlikely to judge it here aside from to convey it's consistent with Clint's legacy. His protagonists certainly are a study in surprise -- cure would roam from Dirty Harry to Wally Kowalski (of "Gran Torino"), from Josie Wales to Nelson Mandela, within the military of Iwo Jima with a "Big Baby."Request Clint about his strategy, which he'll, clearly, deny the existence of any. I'd a leisurely speak with him last weekend in Carmel, Calif. (he was previously the mayor), where he shown his new film before pals and neighbors within the Carmel Film Festival. "My existence is numerous accidents," Eastwood demands. When John Grazer first stated Hoover to him, he wondered why producer was considering vacuums. A look in the fabric, combined having a telephone call from DiCaprio, spurred his interest. Dustin Lance Black was introduced aboard to produce the script (he'd won an Oscar for "Milk") and continued to be while using film through production. The profile of J. Edgar can be a measured one. A driven guy who fought against against very presenting science into the untidy an entire world of crime-busting, more youthful crowd was both callous and psychologically unstable. In comparison, Clint, age 81, seems as rock-solid and relaxed of course. He's a man infamously missing of intellectual pretension. He steadfastly declines to intellectualize about his work. Indeed, his films seem to unfold as adventures in self-discovery. A libertarian by instinct, he's another humanitarian by character -- a profoundly decent and accessible guy who covets the "accidents" define the continuing growth and development of his career. In the 2010 profile of Eastwood inside the NYer, David Denby observed that "people who've been skeptical of Eastwood four decades ago (I'm one of these simple) have extended since capitulated, outdated or died. He's outlasted everyone." Talking with Eastwood last weekend, I didn't sense he'd interact with Denby's remark. Rather, he made an appearance to regard themselves just like a filmmaker in mid-career who was simply already planning his next film. Also it wouldn't be described as a remake. There's a lot of more to know and explore.Remembering MengersLofty tributes were paid out to file for a suit Mengers the other day, but more attention was presented with to her parties as opposed to the numerous pictures she develop. The fabled agent, who died the other day at 79, had an instinct for excellent material and was ready to push, bully and cajole to acquire her deals closed. One time i sent her the initial draft of "Paper Moon," proclaiming that, "Vital developed it, I like it however can't persuade Peter Bogdanovich to think about it on or learn to cast it." Soon after, Mengers was around the telephone, purring, "Don't get worried, honey, I've got Ryan O'Neal and also the daughter Tatum and I'll beat the shit out of your friend Bogdanovich to direct it." Bogdanovich, it switched out, needed the beating, nevertheless the whole project became a member of together and will be a hit.Mengers put glitzy parties for celebs and, in route, paved the means by which for other energy-seeking women of her generation. The obits, however, introduced in your thoughts the brevity of her heyday. She will be a major pressure with the early '70s but losing her energy with the early eighties. By age 54 she surrendered her energy base at ICM, serving briefly as leader in the William Morris Agency simply to uncover that, while major stars continued to be as accepting her party invites, they were not prepared to register again as clients.A couple of of her star clients found resent her forcefulness. Mengers was skeptical of Barbra Streisand's decision to direct "Yentl," and Streisand herself opposed Mengers' urgings to star in the film being directed by Mengers' husband, Jean Claude Tramont (an attractive stock picker but an unskilled director). Progressively more, Mengers was growing weary of Hollywood's corporate making choices and was initiating the organization generally. She spent her final years in relative seclusion but ongoing to request her preferred handful of to her house.Around the personal level, Mengers will be a gracious ally in my opinion. She found my parties, aided me develop my pictures and, later on, frequently dropped me notes of praise for my documents. She once even offered us a glancing hug in my mouth area, coming smoke throughout my face as she moved closer (it had not been a Pall Mall). For Mengers, it was a astonishing show of affection. It absolutely was greatly appreciated. Contact Peter Bart at peter.bart@variety.com

It’s never been theory, but Ipsos’ Worldwide Film Group mentioned today it's started development around the new, up-to-date box-office monitoring product, plus it wants “leading major and independent film art galleries, production companies and key people on the market” to gather to talk about and refine the offering in the collaborative workshop. Oddly enough, there’s no mention of the possible participants (though Ipsos states many have formerly signed on, despite the fact that no invites venture out yet), nevertheless the meeting is positioned for November 16 within the London Hotel in L.A. The research firm’s take seems as being a logical one. Within the release: Within the this past year entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs as well as the media are becoming frustrated within the frequently seen instances where pre-release monitoring and box office anticipation are very unique of the specific performance for just about any movie on opening weekend. These miscalculations can occasionally have a very ripple effect on the film industry by resulting in entrepreneurs to manage their proper direction and P&A spend assets based on results that do not precisely reflect moviegoer intentions. By improving the pre-release monitoring system, entrepreneurs will have a way to higher prepare for the final results from the films opening and ultimately help the conclusion profitability for each film. With Ipsos’ healthy client roster of industry pros, it’s possible the number may be prominent enough to actually help fix a ageing system. Stay up-to-date.

Watch Indian Circus (Dekh Indian circus)

A Sundial Pictures production. (Worldwide sales: Sundial Pictures, Mumbai.) Produced by Anil Lad, Vivek Oberoi, Chirag D. Shah, Mahaveer S. Jain. Co-producers, Chandra Kumar Jajodia, Shikha Sharma, Surendra Chopra. Directed, put together by Mangesh Hadawale. With: Tannishtha Chatterjee, Nawazuddin Sidhiqui, Virendra Singh Rathod, Suhani Oza, Dhanna Ram. (Hindi dialogue)The unbreakable will from the poor mother who want to take her children for the large top might be the potent pressure driving "Watch Indian Circus." Fantastically shot round the dusty flatlands of Rajasthan, this metaphor for modern India supplies a winning combination of social realism as well as the innocent miracles of childhood. Helmer Mangesh Hadawale certifies the commitment of his Marathi-language debut, "Tingya," getting a globally accessible Hindi-lingo crowdpleaser that won everyone else award within the Busan fest. Yet to ensure a domestic distrib, the pic gets the goods gain at local wickets and might crack limited offshore playdates. Part of the 70% in the Indian population that lives in cities, mute laborer Jethu (Nawazuddin Sidhiqui) and also the wife, Kajro (Tannishtha Chatterjee, "Brick Lane"), are merely scraping by on Jethu's meager wages. Instead of Jethu, an connect in the Rabari (outsider) nomadic community, Kajro reps the present side of Indian womanhood. Holding strong opinions on everything, she's determined to possess a proper education for children Ghumroo (Virendra Singh Rathod), a cheeky 8-year-old, and also the youthful sister, Panni (Suhani Oza). Showing how a economically disadvantaged are produced to rely on charitable organization inside a cost within the ruling elite, and the way politics can be a circus that belongs to them, the story happens throughout an election campaign with smooth-speaking candidates supplying "donations" to villagers, clearly in return for votes. After a particular rally, Panni finds a flyer advertising the fantastic Indian Circus, presently undertaking in nearby Jaisalmer. Entranced having a picture from the stilt master she calls "bamboo guy," Panni begs Kajro to think about her with this magical place. Against her better financial judgment, but trying to create some pleasure to her children's lives, Kajro scrapes together the funds and, without telling Jethu, whisks the kids away and off to Jaisalmer throughout your day. Types of inequality and class divisions meet up nicely inside the highly entertaining visit to the big top. Beset by problems different in the cost of transport towards the price of admission, Kajro eventually eventually ends up about 40 missing the price of the household ticket. In the lovely sequence getting miracle realism into play, Kajro sends Ghumroo and Panni to check out the performance without her before a banknote getting a mind that belongs to them out of the blue changes the road of occasions. Interspersed with four zippy musical sequences, "Watch Indian Circus" never allows gritty realism being grinding miserabilism, which is moored by Chatterjee's dynamic central perf since the straight-speaking, very devoted wife and mother who only wants her kids to experience a better existence than her own. Child stars Rathod and Oza are absolutely charming and convincing. Laxman Utekar's widescreen lensing of stunning locations captures all the energy and excitement in the children's journey, and Wayne Sharpe's score strikes a perfect notes of bouncy optimism and thoughtful reflection. The comfort in the tech tasks are topnotch.Camera (color, widescreen) Laxman Utekar editor, James J. What's Missing from Busan This Year? Hollywood

BUSAN, South Korea -- Notice anything different about the Busan International Film Festival this year? Actually, there are many changes.our editor recommendsVietnam Pushes the Envelope with Risky BIFF EntryRelated Topics•Busan International Film ... There's a new festival director,Lee Yong-kwan; there's a new venue, the Busan Cinema Center; and the Asian Film Market has moved to the Busan Exhibition and Convention Centre. But amid all the changes, something's missing: Hollywood. BIFF opened with a Korean film and will close with a Japanese one. This year's gala presentations include films from Korea, China, Hong Kong, Japan, France and the United Kingdom. Director Luc Besson and his The Lady leading lady Michelle Yeoh certainly have Southern California cred, but his Aung San Suu Kyi biopic is hardly Hollywood fare. Of BIFF's three juries, not one has a single American member. A handful of American buyers and exhibitors are attending the Asian film Market. Now, let's keep this in perspective. Busan is an international event, but it is Asia's, not North America's, largest film festival. That Korean films would be most prominent at an event held in Korea, followed by films from throughout Asia, isnot a surprise. That said, the U.S. remains the world's largest film market, and Korean filmmakers have had some success selling remake rights to American producers. Korean actors have also made some headway appearing in Hollywood productions, including singer-actor-soldier Rain and Lee Byung-hun, more so than, say, their counterparts from China and Japan. This is disappointing from an event that has previously welcomed the likes of Oliver Stone, Bryan Singer, Willem Dafoe and Josh Hartnett. While a film festival can certainly be international without a predominance of American titles and filmmakers, their absence this year is conspicuous. 2011 marks the beginning of a new era at BIFF. However, if first impressions are lasting ones, then current indications are that going forward, Busan will be a Korean festival first, an Asian festival second and an international one last. 10 Great Disney Images Worth Paying to See in 3-D

The Lion King 3D’s box-office success is admirable on its own, but Disney is looking to ramp up its output of 3-D reboots in a staggering way: Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc. are all coming back to theaters in 3-D within the next two years. That’s fine, but I can think of 10 great Disney visuals from other animated classics that deserve full-bodied renovation: 10. Pocahontas’s inspired kayaking Pocahontas, the first movie to teach us that our Native American forebears were just stern-looking Kardashians, featured one of the most gorgeous musical sequences of the decade with “Just Around the Riverbend” and its ferocious waterfall imagery. Sure, “Colors of the Wind” is the Oscar-winner, but 3-D could elevate this sequence the way it aided The Lion King’s stunning nature. There’s also something so… Working Girl about “Just Around the Riverbend.” Carly Simon should sing it in the 3-D version while a shoulder-padded Joan Cusack plays Meeko. 9. Every time Jafar brandishes that tacky staff in Aladdin Jafar, the greatest villain of this or any other cinematic epoch, is 3-D on his own: His twisted beard, Aerosmithian sneers and lush costuming pop on the screen like kettle corn. That doesn’t mean his gilded cobra staff deserves anything less than a 3-D overhaul. Its pulsating evil eyes would turn viewers into sputtering street rats. 8. Pinocchio’s dubious debut Seventy years after it first opened, Pinocchio is still a marvel. The titular puppet boy’s expressions are sumptuous and lifelike, the terror of the story is powerful, and a disturbing surreality lingers over the proceedings (which is not unlike Cool World). The “I’ve Got No Strings” bit would be splendid in 3-D, and it’d make Pinocchio’s jaunty steps look like something out of Toy Story. 7. Fantasia’s rapturous “Rhapsody” If any movie is worth revisiting in alarming 3-D, it’s Fantasia 2000. You can have your “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” bit to yourself; we love the urban, sophisticated “Rhapsody in Blue” section where the NYC skyline is traced, colored in and explored. The scaffolding sequences would look as grand as the eye-popping door world from Monsters Inc. 6. Kaa’s hissy hypnosis Sterling Holloway’s sinister voice work helps make The Jungle Book’s snake Kaa so captivating, but the character’s slithering and winding was pretty revelatory back in ‘68. Since we’ve already discovered that hypnosis is a 3-D treat thanks to Jafar, I implore Disney to reopen Mowgli’s story and let this freaky python undulate over audience’s heads. 5. The evil queen’s terrifying mirror buddy in Snow White Vanity! That ancient villain standard. Snow White started it all for Walt in 1937, and all these years later, the image of the Evil Queen’s mirror and the chilling face therein are quite unsettling. Since there are at least two Snow White projects slated for the coming year, it appears Hollywood hasn’t forgotten that menacing mirror either. Charlize Theron, do work it! 4. Winnie the Pooh’s Heffalump psychedelia I’ve sputtered incredulously about this before, but Winnie the Pooh has enjoyed some trippy adventures. The nuttiest one played out in the Disney feature The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, where the adorable stuffed animal suffers from a hallucinatory dream in which Heffalumps, Woozles and honeypots conspire to terrorize him. Let’s see them leap at us too! 3. Toy Story’s unholy claw The crane aliens at Toy Story’s Pizza Planet express our awe well: The claw chooses who will go and who will stay! Those metallic tentacles canted vertiginously over Buzz Lightyear’s head make for the movie’s creepiest moment. Worse yet, Sid’s the one operating the controls. I’d pay a sweet $16 (again!) to see those choppers clamp down on an audience of preteens. 2. Aladdin and Jasmine’s travels with Peabo Bryson Though Beauty and the Beast’s ballroom scene is the much-touted achievement of early ’90s Disney, I’d say Aladdin’s magic carpet ride ranks as a transcendent movie treasure comparable to E.T.’s bike ride. The song is lovely, the vistas are clear and 3-D would add a whole new world of splendor. The carpet’s movements alone would be heartstopping. 1. Cruella de Vil’s slight road rage An unconventional No. 1, yes, but 101 Dalmatians’s Cruella De Vil, that gaunt Tallulah Bankhead clone, looks positively deranged during her climactic brush with road rage at movie’s end. Just as Pongo, Perdita and the puppies escape on a truck, Cruella flies into a fury that would traumatize Jafar, Kaa and every Heffalump. Those eyes! The fun of 3-D is also the horror of 3-D, and if Cruella’s rigid mandible can hurtle at us in jarring reality, we as a moviegoing populace need to witness it.

Talkback: Seriously, Who Asked For a Mister Ed Movie?

Guys, it is really time that we sit down and have a long, hard discussion. I don’t know which of you keeps suggesting that we continually adapt and remake the beloved TV series and films of our youth but it has got to stop… especially after hearing today’s announcement that Fox 2000 is reviving the ’60s talking horse series Mister Ed for the big screen. First, the facts: On the heels (or hooves) of Fox 2000’s other horse feature Flicka, the studio has picked up the rights to the Walter R. Brooks sitcom, which aired originally from 1961 to 1966. While Fox hasn’t selected a writer or director, they do know that a live horse will be used and made to talk with the help of CGI technology. The project was brought to Fox by David Friendly and Jim Mahoney, who have spent a few years securing the rights to the television series from different estates. I understand that there is an entire generation that has probably never heard of Mister Ed and thinks that the first talking animal was Babe. I get that in some ways, Mister Ed: The Movie will bridge a generational gap, and provide a welcome nostalgia rush for some of Ed’s original audience. I know that talking animal movies and cute animal movies in general are easy bank. (In the past two years alone, Kung Fu Panda 2 grossed over $662 million, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel took in over $443 million and Bolt made $314 million.) Finally, I realize that beloved entities such as Mister Ed have a built-in audience. I get that at all, but if we keep greenlighting adaptations, who will be motivated to conceive a new original television series or film, that thirty, forty or fifty years down the line, Hollywood can egregiously remake? What do you think? Is Mister Ed one remake that actually excites you? Would you buy a ticket if Clint Eastwood makes a cameo (as he did in the original series below)? · Fox 2000 Bringing ‘Mr. Ed’ to the Big Screen [THR]

Obama Steps Up 2012 Hollywood Fundraising

“We were discussing the new season of Glee,” tweeted Modern Family‘s Jesse Tyler Ferguson about what he and President Obamasaid to one anotherlast night at the Sunset Strip’s House of Blues. It’s where the actoremceed one of twoHollywood fundraisers for Obama’s re-election campaign Monday. According to a White House pool report, Obama greeted Ferguson, turned to the microphone, and said, “I was telling him that Michelle and the girls love them some Modern Family.” Some in the crowd chanted “Four more years”, roughly 900people paid ticket prices starting at $250 and as much as $10,000 (to secure aphoto with the president). The second fundraiser cost $17,900 for each of the 120 people in attendanceatMelrose Avenue’sFig & Olive restaurant. Theprivate event’sco-hosts included Hollywood producer Jeffrey Katzenberg, his longtime political adviser Andy Spahn, and Tennis Channel CEO Ken Solomon. “I’m going to need your help, so don’t get tired on me now,” Obama was quoted by a pool report as telling showbizattendees like Judd Apatow, Aaron Sorkin, Jamie Foxx, Jack Black, Eva Longoria, Danny DeVito, Rhea Perlman, and Jon Landau (producer of Avatar and Titanic). I urge some of you to watch the Republican debates, Obama added. Obama received a standing ovation from the industry types seated at round tables with white table linens. But news of the president’s impending Hollywood fundraisingwas punctuated by several media articles proclaiming that Tinseltown support for him haderoded greatly since 2008.Recently Democratic activists like Robert Redford, Matt Damon, and Michael Moore have criticized Obama’s inability to stay the liberal course. Katzenberg seemed to address that disappointmentwhen heintroduced Obamaby saying, We must keep fighting for him so he can keep fighting forus.”Katzenberg also noted, “I have a dependency on President Obama. He inherited a crashing economy and two wars and opponets who questioned if he was even board. Yet he kept us moving forward. He was dealt adversity on all fronts, but he maintained his stature. … We must keep fighting for him so he can keep fighting for us.” Katzenbergis leading the Hollywood”bundlers” for the president’sre-election campaign.(Bundlersusetheir substantial personal connections to haul in money for candidates.) Campaign finance reports must be filed by Sepember 30th, and latest3rd-quarterfundraising totalsreleased onOctober 15th. These will reveal who in Hollywood is andisn’t donating this time around toObama. “For better or worse, I’ve maxed out giving to Obama. Though it’s not the smartest use of my money,” one unenthusiastic movie mogul tells me. He’s likea lot of Hollywood Democrats including Steven Spielberg, Peter Chernin, George Clooney, Tom Hanks, and Will Ferrell who have maxed out at $35,800 apiece for the Obama Victory Fund 2012.That’s thejoint account of the Democratic National Committee and Obama For America. The campaign gets the first $5,000 of an individual contribution. A $5K contribution would account for both a primary and general contribution and be the max an individual could give the campaign for the cycle, while $30,800 is the maximum an individual can give to a campaign committee per year.

Blake Lively For Jane Austen & Zombies?

Offered Elizabeth Bennet role in P&P&ZIt is really a truth globally acknowledged that the director in posession of the good script should be in want of the star. As a result it is the fact that Twitch are confirming that Craig Gillespie has offered charge role of Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to Gossip Girl's Blake Lively. If she signs on it will be an option starring role for that actress, who we last saw as Carol Ferris in Eco-friendly Lantern (she may become Star Azure yet...) But it is also one that is been associated with and abandoned by a few her peers already. First within the ring was Natalie Portman (who remains a producer), then Emma Stone and whispers of Scarlett Johansson and Mia Wasikowska. Did they are fully aware something Lively does not yet?The existence of Lars and also the Real Girl and Fright NIght's Gillespie in the helm (changing David O Russell) is reassuring, but it will be intriguing to determine what kind of film he is able to spin in the one-joke source novel, compiled by Seth Graeme-Cruz (who also composed the script).Whether it's passed you by to date, it was in the vanguard of pastiche literary zom-com mash-ups that briefly crazed in bookstores a few years ago. P&P&Z sees Elizabeth Bennet trying to find love and independence like a zombie plague erupts round her and American wildlife strangely begins showing up within the Berkshire countryside. It had been then the kind of Sense and Sensibility and Ocean Monsters, not to mention, Abraham Lincoln subsequently: Vampire Hunter, also is going to a cinema in your area, thanks to Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov.Shooting on Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is pencilled set for the start of 2012.
